George Clooney’s Biggest Movie Career Regret Is Totally Unsurprising

While discussing his new film, George Clooney addressed one of his biggest movie regrets by pointing to Batman & Robin as the film he wishes he had declined. Notably, this is not the first time the veteran actor has addressed the film’s poor reception.

Batman & Robin still haunts George Clooney

The Academy Award-winning actor is once again addressing the impact of Batman & Robin, a film that he has repeatedly described as one of the major regrets of his career.

While promoting his upcoming drama, Jay Kelly, during a recent interview with MovieWeb, George Clooney reflected on his stint as Batman in the 1997 film. He said that if granted a second chance, he would have declined the role immediately.

When asked which project he would want another chance to reconsider, Clooney immediately cited Batman & Robin. He also recalled a recent moment with his young son, who dressed as Batman for Halloween. The actor said, “My son actually dressed as Batman for Halloween. He hasn’t seen the movie. I said, ‘You know, I was Batman.’ He’s like, ‘Not really.’ I was like, ‘You have no idea how right you are.'”

At the Los Angeles premiere of Jay Kelly on November 11, Clooney further shared how the experience shaped his approach to future projects. He said, “Batman & Robin! I learned a lot [from] that one. You don’t learn from succeeding — you learn from failing, and then you have to figure it out along the way, so it’s helpful.” (via PEOPLE)

Released in 1997 and directed by Joel Schumacher, Batman & Robin featured an ensemble cast also including Chris O’Donnell, Uma Thurman, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Alicia Silverstone. Despite its commercial performance, the film was widely criticized and holds an 11% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Meanwhile, George Clooney’s latest film, Jay Kelly, also features Adam Sandler. It had a limited theatrical release on November 14, 2025, and will arrive on Netflix on December 5.
