Alan Ritchson’s New Action Movie Is a Huge Hit Despite Poor Reviews

Alan Ritchson’s new movie, Playdate, has quickly become a big success on Prime Video. The film has captured subscribers’ attention in spite of poor reviews. Given the film’s major success on streaming, a sequel is highly likely. However, the studio has not provided any official confirmation on a follow-up yet.

Alan Ritchson’s Playdate finds major streaming success

Alan Ritchson’s new action-comedy movie Playdate has quickly become a notable performer on streaming charts, recording substantial global viewership in its first week of release. The film’s strong performance has placed it as one of the most-watched new titles on Prime Video.

Debuting on November 12, 2025, Playdate quickly dominated streaming charts, instantly becoming a massive hit. Despite receiving a poor 17% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has been trending as one of the top titles in the U.S. on Prime Video.

The streaming success of Playdate suggests that a sequel to the film is highly likely. Director Luke Greenfield has hinted that Amazon has expressed interest in developing additional content based on the film. He further confirmed that he and writer Neil Goldman have begun developing ideas for the follow-up project. “Obviously, Amazon is primed to go, and I’ve begun talking to Neil about that. We actually have some very funny ideas for what’s next. I’m sure that’s gonna start happening pretty quick,” he said. (via Screen Rant)

The movie stars Ritchson as stay-at-home dad Jeff Eamon, who unexpectedly bonds with Kevin James’ unemployed accountant Brian Jennings during a playdate with their sons. However, the situation soon takes a dangerous turn when mercenaries arrive to take Jeff’s son.

The film’s cast members include Alan Ritchson as Jeff Eamon, Kevin James as Brian Jennings, Sarah Chalke as Emily, Alan Tudyk as Simon Maddox, and Stephen Root as Gordon, among others.
