Dune: The Graphic Novel Preview Shows Incredible First Sandworm Meeting | Exclusive

The 1965 novel Dune is one of the most influential science fiction works of all time. It is also one of the most heavily adapted. However, it still took several decades for the universe of Frank Herbert to be adapted into a graphic novel. Now, Abrams ComicArts is gathering all three volumes of the first officially illustrated adaptation of Dune in a special box set.

Set in an intergalactic empire in the distant future, Dune centers around Paul Atreides and his family. The novel finds them taking control of the titular desert planet, which is the source of the melange or “spice” that is the key to astronavigation. Paul must learn to navigate the unique political and religious landscape of the empire while fighting the manipulations of rival House Harkonnen.

ComingSoon has an exclusive preview of the graphic novel. This scene depicts Paul Atreides’ first encounter with one of the giant sandworms of Dune. The sandworms seem to protect the spice, making gathering the rare resource quite a challenge.

What does the Dune: The Graphic Novel box set feature?

Dune: The Graphic Novel box set collects all three books of the original graphic novel series. The adaptation was scripted by Brian Herbert, son of Frank Herbert, and his artistic collaborator, Kevin J. Anderson. Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín produced the artwork.

“Raúl Allén and Patricia Martín take a dense story and apply all that nuance and subtext to their visual language in adapting Dune, ” noted Oscar-nominated screenwriter Eric Heisserer. “Panels establish scope and geography, and showcase the character who has the power in a scene, all the while guiding you as if you were on a theme park ride through the wild sci-fi action of warring families and giant sand worms. These two have pulled off a rare feat and made a political tale visually compelling.”

The three hardcover volumes are contained within a sturdy slipcase, measuring 7.87 x 5.91 inches. It numbers 552 pages altogether and will retail for $78. This will unquestionably make a fine gift for any Dune fan this holiday season.
