Hugh Jackman’s Beloved Sci-Fi Movie Sequel Gets Good & Bad News

Real Steel fans have been waiting for a sequel for more than 14 years, and if director Shawn Levy’s latest comments are anything to go by, the wait for Real Steel 2 won’t be ending anytime soon. In a recent interview, the 21 Laps Entertainment founder opened up about the prospects of a follow-up to the Hugh Jackman-led sci-fi boxing film, stating that he has yet to make a decision on the future of the celebrated franchise.

Deadpool & Wolverine director on Real Steel 2 possibility

While speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub about the upcoming final season of Stranger Things, Shawn Levy noted that even though Real Steel has managed to garner a dedicated fanbase since its theatrical release, chances of a sequel materializing continue to remain “unclear” for now.

“It’s a hard thing because the movie is so beloved in a way that is out of proportion to however the movie did at the box office. And I just don’t want to touch Real Steel unless I know I’m doing it justice — whether that’s a sequel or a TV show,” the Deadpool & Wolverine director said.

Notably, the 57-year-old filmmaker had previously claimed that work on a Real Steel TV adaptation was progressing steadily. Levy provided the update during a CinemaCon 2024 appearance, going as far as to claim that the writing process for the project had also begun.

Nevertheless, things seem to have changed drastically since Levy’s previous update. “Right now, I’d say TBD,” the veteran director said about Real Steel 2. “But I wouldn’t say likely, and I’m sorry to admit it. But I am protecting what is at least a pure love that we all share for that original movie,” he added.

Levy’s statements suggest that a Real Steel sequel is still possible. However, the follow-up film is as close to becoming a reality now as it was a decade ago.
