Sydney Sweeney addressed the disappointing performance of Christy after the boxing biopic opened to just $1.3 million across 2,011 theaters, placing it among the worst domestic openings for a wide release.
The actress and producer posted on Instagram, writing, “I am so deeply proud of this movie. Proud of the film David [Michôd] made. Proud of the story we told. Proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin. This experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”
Christy ranked 11th in its debut weekend behind Predator: Badlands, Regretting You, The Black Phone 2, and Die My Love. The $15 million film marks Black Bear’s first theatrical release under its new distribution arm and earned a B+ CinemaScore and 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics gave it a 67% rating.
Sweeney continued, “This film stands for survival, courage, and hope. Through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. We all signed on to this film with the belief that Christy’s story could save lives.”
She added, “If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded. So yes, I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. And Christy has been the most impactful project of my life.”
The biopic follows boxer Christy Martin’s rise to fame in the 1990s, her 49 wins, and her survival after a 2010 attempted murder by her husband and coach, Jim Martin. Sweeney, who gained 35 pounds to portray Martin, trained in boxing for months before filming.
