Alexander Skarsgård’s Acclaimed Viking Movie Arriving on Netflix Soon
Netflix has announced the upcoming arrival of one of its most talked-about historical action films, set to debut on the platform soon. The highly anticipated release marks the movie’s long-awaited streaming premiere after earning strong acclaim and a devoted following since its original run.
The Northman to stream on Netflix in December
Robert Eggers’ 2022 historical action drama The Northman joins Netflix US on December 3, 2025, as confirmed by What’s on Netflix in its early preview of December releases. The film, directed by Eggers and co-written with Icelandic author Sjón, stars Alexander Skarsgård as the Viking warrior Amleth, alongside Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.
The story follows Amleth, an exiled prince who vows to avenge his father’s murder at the hands of his uncle Fjölnir. Inspired by the legend of Amleth from Gesta Danorum by Saxo Grammaticus—the same tale that inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet—the film immerses viewers in Norse mythology, shot across Iceland, Ireland, and Northern Ireland. With a $70 million budget, it grossed $69.6 million worldwide during its theatrical run (via Box Office Mojo).
The Northman premiered at TCL Chinese Theatre in Los Angeles on April 18, 2022, before its U.S. release by Focus Features and Universal Pictures internationally. Despite underperforming at the box office, the film achieved strong performance on VOD, topping digital rental charts. It later dominated physical sales, debuting at No. 1 on both Blu-ray and DVD.
Critics widely praised Eggers’ direction, Jarin Blaschke’s cinematography, and Skarsgård’s performance. Rotten Tomatoes reported a 90% approval rating, calling it “a bloody revenge epic and breathtaking visual marvel.” The Guardian described it as “entirely outrageous, with some epic visions of the flaring cosmos.”
Its Netflix debut arrives alongside Emily in Paris Season 5 and Stranger Things Season 5: Volume 2. The film stands out as one of December’s major licensed additions to the platform.
