Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver to lead thriller movie Useful Idiots
Meryl Streep and Sigourney Weaver will co-star in Useful Idiots, a New York–set thriller directed by Joseph Cedar and produced by Fifth Season and Black Bear.
The film follows veteran journalist Diane Castle, played by Streep, who reports on New York’s luxury property market. She grows frustrated with writing lifestyle pieces about the city’s wealthy elite. When she investigates the record-breaking sale of a penthouse, her questions about the mysterious buyer lead her into a network of corruption and danger that threatens her and those around her. The screenplay, written by Cedar and Shachar Bar-On, centers on a powerful oligarch whose influence extends across Manhattan and beyond. He is protected by a network of fixers, enablers, and a young strategist.
Fifth Season will produce and finance the film with Closer Media’s Zhang Xin, Jonathan King, Bruce Cohen, and William Horberg. Executive producers include Graham Taylor, Christopher Slager, and Dan Guando. Black Bear will handle international sales at the American Film Market, while CAA Media Finance will oversee U.S. rights.
This marks Streep’s first major film role since portraying the U.S. president in 2021’s Don’t Look Up. She currently appears in Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building and is filming The Devil Wears Prada 2. Weaver, meanwhile, continues her work in James Cameron’s Avatar franchise, including Avatar: Fire and Ash, and remains known for Alien, Ghostbusters, Working Girl, and Gorillas in the Mist. Notably, Cedar recently helmed HBO’s series Our Boys.
