Gerard Butler Teams With Mission: Impossible Star for New Action Movie

Gerard Butler (How to Train Your Dragon) and Hayley Atwell (Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning) have signed on for the leading roles in the upcoming hostage crisis movie Empire City. Production is expected to begin sometime this month. At the moment, the project has no distributor yet. Sales are still set to continue next week at the American Film Market.

What do we know about Gerard Butler’s Empire City?

“In the film, when a hostage crisis erupts inside New York’s landmark Clybourn Building, firefighter Rhett (Butler), his squad, and his NYPD wife Dani (Atwell) must fight and navigate their way through the building to rescue the captives,” reads the official synopsis.

Empire City will be directed by Love & Monsters filmmaker Michael Matthews from a screenplay co-written by Brian Tucker and S. Craig Zahler. The movie will be produced by Butler and Alan Siegel for G-BASE, Marc Butan for MadRiver Pictures, and Paul Currie. Executive producers are Leonine Studios’ Quirin Berg and Alexander Janssen.

Butler was most recently seen in Lionsgate’s Den of Thieves 2: Pantera with O’Shea Jackson Jr., and in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie, where he reprised his role as Stoick the Vast from the animated trilogy. He will also be reprising his role as John Garrity in Greenland 2: Migration, which serves as a sequel to the 2020 survival disaster movie.

As for Atwell, she recently starred opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. At the moment, rumors suggested that she might be reprising her role as Peggy Carter in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday movie.
