Alexandra Daddario’s Desire to be a Mom Made Her Connect With I Wish You All the Best | Interview
ComingSoon spoke with I Wish You All the Best star Alexandra Daddario about her role in the new coming-of-age movie, I Wish You All the Best. The actress discussed her character’s strength, working with Cole Sprouse, and more. Lionsgate will release the movie in theaters on November 7.
“In this refreshingly modern coming-of-age story based on the best-selling book by Mason Deaver, a high school junior (Corey Fogelmanis) comes out as nonbinary and is thrown out of their family’s home. With nowhere else to turn, they move in with their estranged older sister (Alexandra Daddario) and her husband (Cole Sprouse). After enrolling in a new school, they find support from an eccentric art teacher (Lena Dunham) and form an unexpected bond with a kindhearted student (Miles Gutierrez-Riley). With the help of their new relationships, they navigate the awkward hurdles of young adulthood in this sweetly funny journey of self-discovery that celebrates the power of being true to yourself,” says the official synopsis.
Tyler Treese: Alexandra, your character has a lot going on. She’s a new mother. She takes in her brother after he comes out and is kicked out of the house. It’d be very easy for her to be overwhelmed, but she always leads with kindness. What aspects of Hannah really connected with you when you read the script?
Alexandra Daddario: I shot this before I became a mother myself, but I think I was so on the track to become a mother and wanted to be a mother for so long that I immediately related to that. And I think that she’s an amazing mother because she’s able to stay calm under pressure, deal with all these different things, and support the people around her, and not be heavy-handed about it. Really just allow people to be the best version that they can be in her family. So I was very drawn to that.
This is Tommy Dorfman’s directorial debut. I never would’ve guessed it. It’s very confidently shot. What impressed you the most about just working with her, and especially since it was her first time? Because it doesn’t look like it.
Alexandra Daddario: I think you said it. I was incredibly impressed by her confidence, and I’ve been on a lot of sets that do not feel as confidently run, and you have a little bit of distraction or chaos because of the lack of confidence. And she is such a confident director, and allowed us to all relax and do our jobs to the best of our abilities, because coming to set every day was fun. She made it all look easy when it’s not easy at all.
I love seeing you and Cole Sprouse as a couple in the film. How is it developing the relationship that we see on screen? Because he is always charming, and you guys just feel right together. It was really fun to watch.
Yeah, we had great… I think it was, he really did such a great job being the sort of the dad and he felt like such a dad to me. I fell into that sort of mother role, and I think we were both ready to be open and to take on these roles. So it was really easy. It was really fun, and I think we bounced off each other really well.
There’s a funny scene where he calls himself a brother-father to Corey’s character, which I thought was really fun.
I did want to ask you about Corey. What stood out about him as a scene partner? Because he really gives a strong performance here.
Alexandra Daddario: Corey is an incredible actor, very devoted, very natural, all I think just incredible. Watching Corey and Tommy work with each other was beautiful as well. So I was incredibly impressed and lucky to be in a film with such an amazing actor.
The film also has a great message. I was really shocked and disappointed to find out that the book it’s based on is banned in schools. So what does it mean for you to be part of this movie that’s really getting that message out to a greater audience?
I think it’s wonderful. I think that there are all different types of people who live all different types of ways, and that’s what being human is all about. That’s what I love about being an actress. I get to tell stories, and through art, we can learn about other people and how other people live and how other people have lived. So, it’s just for me a wonderful opportunity to tell a great story, and it’s nothing to be afraid of.
Thanks to Alexandra Daddario for taking the time to discuss I Wish You All the Best.
