Amanda Seyfried’s Oscars Contender The Testament of Ann Lee Gets Teaser Trailer

Searchlight Pictures has released the official teaser trailer for The Testament of Ann Lee, a historical musical drama starring Amanda Seyfried.

Searchlight’s synopsis reads: “From award-winning writer-director Mona Fastvold comes the extraordinary true legend of Ann Lee, founder of the devotional sect known as the Shakers. Academy Award nominee Amanda Seyfried stars as the Shaker’s irrepressible leader, who preached gender and social equality and was revered by her followers.”

What happens in The Testament of Ann Lee teaser trailer?

Seyfried stars as Ann Lee, the founder of the Shakers’ religious sect. The Shakers worship by dancing, or “shaking,” their bodies with such fervor and passion. The film chronicles Ann’s attempt to build a utopia and the sacrifices her followers must make along the way.

Besides Seyfried, the film stars Thomasin McKenzie, Lewis Pullman, Tim Blake Nelson, Christopher Abbott, Stacy Martin, Matthew Beard, Scott Handy, Viola Prettejohn, Jamie Bogyo, and David Cale.

The Testament of Ann Lee features over 12 traditional Shaker hymns reimagined as rapturous movements. Celia Rowlson-Hall choreographed the dances, and Academy Award-winning composer Daniel Blumberg crafted the songs and score.

Mona Fastvold directs The Testament of Ann Lee from a screenplay she co-wrote with her partner, Brady Corbet. Fastvold and Corbet collaborated on 2024’s The Brutalist, the Oscar-winning epic period drama about a Holocaust survivor who emigrates to the United States to become an architect.

Producers include Fastvold, Corbet, Andrew Morrison, Joshua Horsfield, Viktória Petrányi, Gregory Jankilevitsch, Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska, Lillian LaSalle, and Mark Lampert.

The Testament of Ann Lee premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival and competed for the Golden Lion. Fastvold’s film garnered positive reviews, with Seyfried’s performance receiving widespread critical acclaim. Many pundits believe Seyfried is in contention to receive an Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

The Testament of Ann Lee opens in theaters on December 25, 2025.
