Star Wars: Starfighter Actor Gives Filming Update on Ryan Gosling Movie

The House of the Dragon star has shared a new update about his role in Star Wars: Starfighter. The highly anticipated standalone film is directed by Shawn Levy and set to release on May 28, 2027.

Matt Smith reveals when he will start filming for Star Wars: Starfighter

Smith revealed to A Rabbit’s Foot that he will begin filming Star Wars: Starfighter in December 2025. He also offered a glimpse into the meticulous preparation happening behind the scenes. He is currently deep in the process of developing his character’s visual identity. “I’m going through this process now for the job I’m about to do,” Smith stated.

“We’re going through the process of trying to find a costume, and sometimes you don’t know if you love a costume until you’ve worn it for a couple of days. I’m about to do Star Wars in December, and we’re sort of trying to develop the look for that.” This attention to detail is especially crucial, as Smith is widely reported to be playing a villain in the film—a role that demands a memorable and imposing aesthetic. His co-star, Mia Goth, is also rumored to be portraying an antagonist.

The fact that Matt Smith is only starting in December raises questions about the size of his role. Lucasfilm officially announced that Starfighter began production in the U.K. in August, with a star-studded cast including Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray already on set. Smith’s later arrival could indicate a significant but possibly not leading part. However, it may also reflect the filmmakers’ dedication to perfecting the characters’ menacing arcs before filming his scenes.

Moreover, this isn’t Matt Smith’s first encounter with a Star Wars production. Rumors once linked him to the role of a young Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but those plans ultimately fell through. Now, he officially begins his journey to a galaxy far, far away in December.
