Wicked: For Good Director Breaks Silence on Part 3 & Spin-off Chances

Jon M. Chu addressed one of Wicked’s most talked-about questions ahead of the release of Wicked: For Good. The director opened up about the possibility of a third installment or spinoff following the two-part musical adaptation.

Jon M. Chu on if Wicked Part 3 or spin-off can happen

Jon M. Chu addressed speculation about the future of the Wicked franchise in a new interview with Access Hollywood at the Wicked: For Good world premiere in São Paulo, Brazil. The director confirmed that there are currently no plans for a third installment or a spinoff beyond the two-part adaptation.

When asked if he would consider continuing the story, Chu said, “As far as I know, this was always meant to be a two-movie experience.” He described the duology as “a journey over a year of time that everyone can take this era, bring their friends, their family, and get to know these women, dress up like them, be like them, be inspired by them.”

While emphasizing that Wicked: For Good completes the intended storyline, Chu acknowledged that future projects could depend on audience reception. “You never know. People want that, but they have to see movie two first. Maybe the audience could tell us,” he told Access Hollywood. He repeated that the sequel represents “the end of an era,” but added another “You never know,” leaving open the possibility of revisiting Oz.

During the same interview, Chu addressed Ariana Grande’s absence from the premiere due to flight delays, saying, “I know how hard they tried to get her here and just the circumstances couldn’t get her here in time. She loves them, and I’m filming stuff so I can send her on her phone later today.”

Wicked: For Good continues Elphaba’s story as she discovers the Wizard’s deception. Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Jonathan Bailey, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Yeoh lead the cast. The film opens in theaters on Nov. 21, 2025.
