Meghan Markle has officially returned to acting after an eight-year hiatus. Sources confirmed to Deadline that the Duchess of Sussex has joined the cast of Amazon MGM Studios’ film Close Personal Friends, marking her first role since departing Suits in 2017. She was recently seen filming in Pasadena, Calif., where People reported she “seemed very relaxed and happy” on set.
According to The Sun, Markle has a small role in the Jason Orley–directed project, which also stars Brie Larson, Lily Collins, Jack Quaid, and Henry Golding. An insider told People, “She introduced herself to everyone and was very sweet and down-to-earth.” The film, described as a comedy about a couple meeting celebrities during a Santa Barbara trip, began production in London before moving to California. Amazon declined to comment on Markle’s involvement.
The project marks Markle’s first scripted acting appearance since she left Suits before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. Suits creator Aaron Korsh told Deadline he had once considered a cameo for Markle in the show’s finale but chose not to ask out of respect for her “new life.” Markle’s last on-camera appearance was in her Netflix cooking series With Love, Meghan, which released two seasons under her Archewell Productions banner.
A studio source told The Sun, “It is Meghan’s way of gently putting her toe back in the water and seeing how she enjoys being back on set.” Another source said Prince Harry “is really supportive and simply wants Meghan to do whatever brings her joy.” The couple currently resides in Santa Barbara with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
