Frankenstein’s Jacob Elordi Had Final Say in Creature’s Look & Behavior
Guillermo del Toro may have been the mastermind behind Netflix’s upcoming gothic drama Frankenstein, but it was Jacob Elordi who characterized the entire persona of the Creature. In a recent interview, he opened up about how he prepared to embody a monster who came to life after a freakish science experiment, wherein he revealed that it was he who designed his character’s look, accent, as well as movement.
Jacob Elordi says he had ‘complete liberty to create’ Creature in Frankenstein
During a recent conversation in London, the Euphoria star noted that during the filming of Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, he was responsible for designing the Creature’s appearance and demeanor.
“I had complete liberty to create [the Creature] the way that I saw it,” Jacob Elordi stated to GamesRadar+. He further added, “The first time I read the screenplay, I got all these images in my head, and then it was just the practical process of applying.”
Additionally, Elordi had the final say in the Creature’s movement patterns, considering the monster was patched up using body parts from a multitude of corpses.
Explaining how he came up with the unconventional motions and gestures for the Creature, the 28-year-old actor noted, “I studied butoh, which is this Japanese dance. It was a lot of walking around in strange ways and watching myself in the mirror, and I’d go like this, and then I’d ask someone, ‘Does this look good? And they’d be like, ‘Definitely don’t do that.’ Or, like, ‘Too much.’ But just a lot of trial and error. And then also just responding to the logic of the screenplay and what that suffering is like, you know, considering all the different body parts.”
Meanwhile, the process for deciding upon the Creature’s peculiar accent was “very, very similar, actually,” as per the BAFTA Film Awards nominee. Moreover, he revealed that he observed a scene where Oscar Isaac’s character constructs the Creature, and he moves the latter’s trachea. This made Elordi curious about its impact on the monster’s voice and movement.
Featuring Elordi, Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Christoph Waltz, and others, Frankenstein is currently on track to premiere on Netflix on November 7.
