The first trailer for Scream 7 has reignited backlash across social media, as fans continue to protest Spyglass Media’s firing of Melissa Barrera in 2023. The actress, who led Scream (2022) and Scream VI (2023), was removed from the franchise following her online comments about the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Spyglass said it had “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form.” Following her exit, co-star Jenna Ortega also departed the project, later explaining that the film “was all kind of falling apart” without Barrera.
Fans slam Scream 7 after trailer release over Melissa Barrera’s firing
After the trailer’s release, many fans voiced frustration online. One user wrote, “This is missing two very important women,” referring to Barrera and Ortega.
Another said, “Where the Scream franchise ended for me,” sharing an image from Scream VI. Posts calling for a boycott quickly spread, with one fan writing, “Boycott Scream 7 and support Scary Movie 6 instead.”
Several users promoted Barrera’s other films, including Your Monster (2024) and The Copenhagen Test, premiering December 27. A post read, “Reminder to everyone: Your Monster starring Melissa Barrera is streaming on HBO Max and Hulu.” Supporters also highlighted her upcoming projects as alternatives to Scream 7.
In addition to fan reactions, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement launched a campaign against the film, joined by 22 arts and advocacy groups. Others, however, defended the filmmakers and returning stars, arguing that the franchise “does not need anyone but Ghostface,” emphasizing that the series’ longevity relies on its legacy and consistent reinvention rather than any single performer’s presence.
Set for release on February 27, 2026, Scream 7 stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and new cast members Joel McHale, Isabel May, and Mckenna Grace, with Kevin Williamson returning as director.
