Mel Gibson’s Movie About American Revolution Coming to Netflix
Netflix has announced that Mel Gibson’s acclaimed historical war drama is joining its November lineup. The film, set during the American Revolution, follows a farmer drawn into the fight for independence after tragedy strikes his family. Its arrival adds one of Gibson’s most notable performances to Netflix’s growing collection of classic Hollywood epics.
The Patriot to stream on Netflix in November
Netflix will add The Patriot (2000) to its U.S. streaming lineup on November 1, 2025, as part of the new titles arriving in November.
Directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Robert Rodat, the historical war drama stars Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Joely Richardson, Jason Isaacs, Chris Cooper, and Tom Wilkinson. Set during the American Revolutionary War, it follows Benjamin Martin, a farmer and widower. He reluctantly joins the fight against the British after his family becomes a target of war violence.
The film premiered in June 2000 and grossed $215.3 million worldwide against a $110 million budget. It received three Academy Award nominations, including Best Cinematography, Best Original Score (John Williams), and Best Sound. The movie was primarily filmed in South Carolina, including Charleston, Rock Hill, and Georgetown. Screenwriter Robert Rodat said Gibson’s character was a composite of real-life figures such as Francis Marion, Daniel Morgan, Andrew Pickens, and Thomas Sumter.
Upon release, The Patriot earned generally favorable reviews with a 61% Rotten Tomatoes rating and a CinemaScore grade of “A.” Critics praised the performances and large-scale battle sequences but noted its fictionalized portrayal of historical events. The film generated controversy in the U.K. for its depiction of British troops and its parallels to later wartime atrocities.
The Patriot arrives on Netflix alongside other major November additions such as Tenet, The Nun II, Elvis, Crazy Rich Asians, and Ready Player One. Netflix expands its monthly lineup with a mix of historical dramas, blockbusters, and seasonal titles across multiple genres.
