The Batman’s Colin Farrell on Why He Keeps Coming Back
Colin Farrell, who plays Oswald “Oz” Cobb / The Penguin in Matt Reeves’ Batman Epic Crime Saga, recently spoke about his love for the character and the fictional universe he inhabits. Farrell has received multiple Primetime Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his performance as Oz Cobb.
Colin Farrell elaborates on his love for The Batman universe
Farrell reflected on why he keeps returning to Reeves’ Batman universe to play the Penguin in a new interview with Collider. He first portrayed the character in the 2022 film The Batman and reprised the role in the 2024 HBO series The Penguin. He will also appear in the upcoming sequel to The Batman.
“I love that world,” Farrell said, adding, “I mean, I loved it as a fan of film since Batman ‘66. I grew up watching that, and Burgess Meredith was my first Penguin, and then Danny DeVito was my second Penguin. Then Chris Nolan’s work, of course, was extraordinary in that universe.”
Farrell continued, “But to see how Matt [Reeves] has re-envisioned a world that’s unique enough and still honors the struggles of that city and the psychological struggles of the character of Bruce Wayne, and Batman, and who is the shadow of who — is Bruce Wayne the real guy, or is Batman?”
Farrell noted that it was “such a joy” for him to be part of a world where Batman and Bruce Wayne existed. In a separate interview, Farrell shared details about how much time has passed within the universe between the events of The Penguin and The Batman 2. He disclosed that The Batman 2 takes place only “a few weeks after” what happened in The Penguin.
Matt Reeves is directing The Batman 2 from a script he penned with Mattson Tomlin. The movie is currently scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 1, 2027.
