Jeremy Renner on Why Marvel Stuck With Him but Fired Jonathan Majors

Jeremy Renner, who plays Clint Barton / Hawkeye in the MCU, recently reflected on why he thinks Disney / Marvel Studios fired Jonathan Majors but retained him. Notably, Majors was cast as Kang the Conqueror / He Who Remains in the franchise and appeared in several Marvel projects before the company decided to part ways with him.

Jeremy Renner says Marvel had big plans for Jonathan Majors’ Kang

Renner made an appearance on The Breakfast Club and discussed allegations against him and Majors. When Charlamagne tha God asked why Marvel decided to stick with him and “discard” Majors, Renner replied, “I don’t know. I don’t know enough about Jonathan and his situation to know. I know they had big plans for that character. That’s for sure. Whatever transpired, that sucks. I think due diligence really has to be played out. So, I don’t know enough information to know.”

This prompted the radio host to say, “I mean, it doesn’t seem fair, and how it happened.” He accepted that the situations of the two actors had nothing to do with each other before adding that he was just addressing how Marvel responded.

Renner subsequently said, “I think there’s a bigger scope to that,” before criticizing what he referred to as “cancel culture.”

In 2019, Renner’s former wife, Sonni Pacheco, leveled multiple allegations against him, including drug use, threatening to kill her, and firing a gun while their daughter was close by. Renner has denied the allegations several times throughout the years. Meanwhile, in 2024, Majors received a sentence of 52 weeks of counselling and probation for assaulting his former girlfriend.

Before his firing, Majors appeared in the 2023 MCU feature Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the Disney+ series Loki. Renner is one of the original Avengers and has been part of the MCU since before the first Avengers film was released. His most recent Marvel appearance was in the 2024 series Echo.
