David Fincher’s Star Wars Movie Wasn’t Made Over 1 Major Disagreement
Before J.J. Abrams returned to direct Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Golden Globe-winning director David Fincher was one of the acclaimed filmmakers who almost directed the 2019 movie. However, despite turning down the offer to direct Episode IX, it seems like Fincher was actually still interested in doing a Star Wars movie.
According to The InSneider, Fincher had an idea for a sequel to The Rise of Skywalker, which he pitched to Lucasfilm. However, negotiations fell through since Lucasfilm wasn’t able to grant The Fight Club director’s conditions to helm the project.
What was the disagreement between Lucasfilm and David Fincher?
The outlet claimed that the main factor why Lucasfilm turned down Fincher’s Rise of Skywalker sequel is that the studio could not give up full control over the movie’s final cut. Further details about Fincher’s scrapped Star Wars movie weren’t disclosed.
Despite this, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Fincher would eventually get to direct a Star Wars project in the future due to his history with the franchise. Before becoming an award-winning filmmaker, he initially worked as an assistant cameraman on Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Studio president Kathleen Kennedy also previously worked on Fincher’s 2008 movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which she co-produced.
Fincher isn’t the only acclaimed director whose Star Wars pitch got denied, as it has been recently confirmed that Steven Soderbergh previously developed a solo Kylo Ren movie with Adam Driver. The project was surprisingly turned down by Disney executives who just didn’t see how Driver’s character could still be alive.
