The Mask Director Wants Jim Carrey To Play Iconic Horror Movie Villain

Chuck Russell, who directed The Mask, believes the film’s star, Jim Carrey, could play an iconic horror movie villain.

What villain does The Mask’s director want Jim Carrey to play?

Before directing 1994’s The Mask, Russell directed and co-wrote A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, the third movie in the horror franchise. The villain in A Nightmare on Elm Street is Freddy Krueger, a murderous spirit with a metal-clawed glove who kills people in their dreams.

Robert Englund is the actor most associated with playing Freddy Krueger. Englund portrayed the villain in eight movies, including A Nightmare on Elm Street 3. However, Englund has not played Freddy since 2003’s Freddy vs. Jason.

During an appearance on Dread Central’s Development Hell podcast, Russell said he would make another Nightmare on Elm Street. Russell’s first call would be to Englund.

“I still think Robert, for me, is the only Freddy,” Russell said. “Were I to be involved in a new Elm Street, A, I’d be delighted, and B, my first goal would be to get Robert involved.”

If Englund could not play Freddy, host Josh Korngut mentioned Carrey as a possible replacement. Russell likes the idea of casting Carrey, but only if the franchise reinvents itself and goes in a “new direction.”

“Jim, in my opinion, could almost do anything if he put his heart into it,” Russell explained. “For Jim to do it, we’d have to do something that was another leap in the Elm Street series — a little bit like what Wes did with his very meta New Nightmare. I think Jim would only consider it, and I’d only consider harnessing Jim, if there was a bold new direction for Elm Street.“

2010’s A Nightmare on Elm Street is the last film released in the franchise. The estate of Wes Craven, the writer and creator of Freddy Krueger, reportedly has the rights to A Nightmare on Elm Street. No new movies featuring Freddy are in development.
