Why KPop Demon Hunters May Not Get a Live-Action Sequel After All

Directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans recently spoke about whether the Netflix sequel KPop Demon Hunters 2 could be live-action. KPop Demon Hunters was released on Netflix on June 20, 2025, and became one of the streaming platform’s biggest hits ever, quickly securing its spot as the most-watched original animated film on Netflix.

Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans think live-action KPop Demon Hunters 2 would be ‘quite hard’

KPop Demon Hunters directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans recently sat down with Comic Book Resources and shared whether the film’s sequel could be live-action.

In the conversation, Kang and Appelhans were asked if they would like the sequel to be animated. To this, Kang replied that making a live-action sequel to KPop Demon Hunters will be “so much more challenging.”

Appelhans agreed with Kang and added, “Talking about animation, and what’s hard about it, which is it’s not just about recreating real life, it’s about a kind of distillation of it. You’re trying to push everything. If it’s a shape, you push the shape. If it’s an idea, you push the idea… and that does create a certain framework that works really well with this tone.”

Kang further stated, “I think it’d be more difficult, and this was hard. So, I can’t even think about something harder than this.”

The duo also revealed that they don’t consider KPop Demon Hunters to be an anime.

Previously, Arden Cho, who voiced the character of Rumi in the movie, shared what she would like to see in the sequel. In an interview with Variety in August 2025, she said, “I would love to see if we can rescue Jinu! It is a magical world, right? I feel like the options are endless, and our incredible writers and directors left it a bit open. Anything is possible.”
