ComingSoon is debuting a brand-new exclusive trailer for Standout: The Ben Kjar Story, a documentary feature about a wrestler’s inspirational journey to becoming the world champion he’s meant to be, despite facing multiple challenges along the way. The movie hails from A Minecraft Movie director Jared Hess, who is serving as its producer.
“Standout tells the remarkable true story of wrestler Ben Kjar, who was born with Crouzon Syndrome, a rare craniofacial condition,” reads the synopsis. “Defying both medical predictions and social expectations, Kjar rose to become a three-time state wrestling champion, Utah Valley University’s first-ever NCAA Division I All-American, and a world champion in Greco-Roman wrestling—all while embracing his difference and inspiring others to do the same.”

When is the release date for Standout: The Ben Kjar Story?
Standout: The Ben Kjar Story is now scheduled to arrive in theaters on January 23, 2026. The movie had its world premiere at the 2025 Slamdance Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Spirit of Slamdance Award.
The documentary is written, directed, and produced by Tanner Christensen. Besides Kjar, it will also feature participation from Stana Kjar, Scott Kjar, Anthony Robles, LaCol Grant, Seth Wright, and Colton Fielding. The creative team also includes director of photography T.C. Christensen and composer Christian Davis.
“Standout is more than a sports story. It’s a universal story about resilience, courage, and the power of choosing to stand out rather than blend in,” Christensen said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to partner with Angel Studios and Tuckett Media to give audiences a chance to experience Ben’s entertaining, heartwarming, life-changing story.”
Ben Kjar added, “These incredible partners know how to share impactful stories, and this is a story that will impact everyone that watches it—from kids to grandparents—because we’ve all felt the weight of being different. Standout shows that our differences aren’t weaknesses; they’re the very things that allow us to make a difference.”
