Channing Tatum Explains Why 23 Jump Street Won’t Happen Despite Great Script
Channing Tatum recently opened up about the potential future of the 21 Jump Street franchise and shed some light as to why a 23 Jump Street might not be happening anytime soon.
Why won’t 23 Jump Street happen according to Channing Tatum?
Speaking to Variety in a recent interview, Tatum opened up as to why a sequel to 2014’s 22 Jump Street hasn’t happened yet. Tatum said that a script for the film exists and is “sincerely the best script I’ve ever read for me and Jonah [Hill],” but that it won’t be happening any time soon due to one specific reason.
“I get asked more about ‘Jump Street 3’ than any other movie on the face of the planet that I’ve ever done,” Tatum said. “I don’t think it’ll ever happen. The problem is the overhead. It would cost as much as the actual budget of the film — if not more — because of all the producers involved. It’s just too top-heavy. It falls over every time.”
Specifically, Tatum pointed to producer fees that would be associated with the project. Tatum said that while he, Jonah Hill, Phil Lord, and Chris Miller (the latter duo of whom directed the first two movies) have all dropped their fees for a prospective sequel, one producer has not.
“[Neal H. Moritz]‘s price for a producer fee is huge,” said Tatum candidly. “And to be honest, that’s what’s killing it.”
Tatum and Hill first starred in 21 Jump Street in 2012, adapting the 1987 television series into a new film. The pair returned in 2014 for a sequel, 22 Jump Street, which also starred Peter Stormare, Ice Cube, Wyatt Russell, Amber Stevens, Jillian Bell, Nick Offerman, Keith Lucas, and more.
