Avatar 4 Might Not Be the Next Avatar Movie After Fire and Ash

According to one of the movie’s biggest stars, James Cameron might helm a documentary about the making of Avatar before traveling back to Pandora for Avatar 4.

Zoe Saldaña explains why an Avatar documentary would be important

Zoe Saldaña is set to reprise her role of Neytiri in the third Avatar movie, Avatar: Fire and Ash. Cameron plans to make an Avatar 4 and 5 next. However, the Oscar winner might make another movie about the Avatar universe before Avatar 4 gets made.

In an interview with Beyond Noise, Saldaña revealed that Cameron is “considering a documentary about the making of Avatar.” Saldaña is pushing for the documentary, as it would give her a chance to shine a light on performance capture and how it has become an “empowering form of acting.”

“It gives us the credit, the ability to own 100 percent of our performance on screen,” Saldaña explained. “With animation, you might go into the studio for [a few] sessions; that’s as much as they’ll need you for the whole movie. You go into a studio, however you’re dressed, and you lend your voice, right? Performance capture means that Avatar wouldn’t exist if Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, myself, and the entire cast didn’t get up and put those dots on our faces.

“We put on that little unitard with all those dots on it, and step into a volume — that’s what we call the set — that’s rigged on the ceiling, with all these cameras in measured positions. They’re all pointing into this space that finds us, and feeds that information into the system that is Pandora.”

The Avatar movies are an enormous undertaking for Saldaña and the rest of the cast. To play Neytiri, Saldaña had to train in archery, martial arts, free diving, and scuba diving. Saldaña also had to learn how to walk like an “extraterrestrial human species.”

Fans can see Saldaña’s hard work come to fruition in Avatar: Fire and Ash, in theaters on December 19, 2025. Avatar 4 is scheduled for release on December 21, 2029, with Avatar 5 following two years later on December 19, 2031.
