James Gunn Answers if Amanda Waller Will Be Played by Viola Davis
Viola Davis‘ Amanda Waller has been one of the few characters to have appeared in both the DCEU and the new DCU, and James Gunn recently provided an update on the character’s future. In a recent interview, the DC Studios co-CEO opened up about the fate of the former director of A.R.G.U.S., while also sharing information on whether the part will be recast for upcoming DCU projects.
James Gunn hopes for Viola Davis to return as Amanda Waller
While speaking with Deadline, Gunn clarified Amanda Waller’s status in the DCU, confirming that he still wants Davis to reprise the role in the future.
“I would certainly hope so,” the Guardians of the Galaxy director said about Davis returning as Waller. “Viola and I have a great relationship. I love her to death. I think she’s one of the greatest actors I’ve ever worked with, and so I would certainly hope so,” he added.
Notably, a full-fledged series based around Amanda Waller has been in the works for the DCU for some time now. However, no encouraging updates regarding its development have come out recently.
During his appearance at the Peacemaker Season 2 red carpet premiere, Gunn stated that even though work has begun on Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller series, several other projects have taken precedence over the series since. “We’re working on it, but you know some things have moved really fastly and some things not so fast – and that’s been a thing that hasn’t moved so fast. But I can’t wait to see Viola get her Waller outfits on, with her s—– floral dresses and do something special,” he said.
Having first appeared as the no-nonsense government official in 2016’s Suicide Squad, Davis returned as Waller in the 2021 follow-up The Suicide Squad, before voicing the animated version of the character in 2024’s Creature Commandos. She also has two uncredited cameos as Amanda Waller in 2022’s Black Adam and the Peacemaker series.
While James Gunn’s interview with Deadline is no longer available on the media outlet’s official website, viewers can still catch its syndicated version on Yahoo News.
