Michael Chiklis and Ioan Gruffudd open to return for Avengers: Secret Wars
Ioan Gruffudd and Michael Chiklis discussed their time as Mr. Fantastic and the Thing during the “Back to the Baxter Building” panel at New York Comic Con (via Variety). Both actors confirmed they would “absolutely” return to reprise their roles in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars. The audience reacted with loud cheers as Chiklis ended the discussion by saying, “It’s clobberin’ time,” signaling his enthusiasm to rejoin the Marvel universe.
Chiklis said the restrictive Thing suit was so difficult to wear that he nearly quit the role. “Once they locked the Thing with the glue, I couldn’t get out of it,” he said, adding, “Once they glued the hands on, I’m trapped in this suit with no zipper.”
He further revealed that the suit left him overheated and anxious, and added, “Even with that, there were two occasions where I flipped out and said, ‘I got to get out.’ They pulled everything off me, and that cost us hours.” He shared that a psychiatrist helped him manage panic during filming.
Meanwhile, Gruffudd spoke about perfecting his American accent for the role of Mr. Fantastic, saying, “It’s important to find the character’s voice authentically. That comes from reading the script over and over and sitting down with the dialect coach to get an idea of what would sound right.” He called Mr. Fantastic “bright and honorable,” saying understanding the character’s mindset helped him play the role.
Both reflected on their close bond with castmates while filming Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Gruffudd said, “When you’re immersed in something like that for almost six months… you do become a family.” He added that seeing the completed film “was just a wild ride.”
