Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo Joins Cast of Another Fantasy Musical Movie
Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo has joined the cast of another fantasy musical movie.
Erivo is known for playing Elphaba Thropp in Wicked, which was released in 2024 and co-stars Ariana Grande. She’ll soon be seen reprising that role in the sequel, titled Wicked: For Good, which hits theaters next month.
As announced on Twitter, Erivo has also now joined the cast of an animated fantasy musical titled Bad Fairies.
What do we know about Bad Fairies with Cynthia Erivo?
Announced in 2024, Bad Fairies is being directed by Megan Nicole Dong, who is known for creating Netflix’s animated musical series Centaurworld. Songs for the new movie, per The Hollywood Reporter, will be written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, while Isabella Summers will compose the score.
The movie follows a “delightfully subversive gang of fairies as they shake up their magical world.” Erivo voices a fairy named Jayne Stapleton, whose “defiant streak sparks a rebellion.”
Olivier Staphylas is co-directing Bad Fairies, while the screenplay comes from Deborah Frances-White. Carolyn Soper serves as a producer for the Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith movie, while DNEG Animation is a digital partner.
Erivo’s performance as Elphaba earned her a Best Actress Academy Award nomination last year, while she was also nominated for the same award in 2019 for her Harriet. Her filmography also includes 2018’s Widows, 2018’s Bad Times at the El Royale, 2021’s Chaos Walking, 2021’s Needle in a Timestack, 2022’s Pinocchio, 2023’s Drift, and 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun. She has been in television shows such as The Outsider, Poker Face, Big Mouth, and more.
Bad Fairies will be released in United States theaters on May 21, 2027, by Warner Bros. Pictures. The only other movie that currently has the same release date is Wes Ball’s The Legend of Zelda, which is being made for Columbia Pictures and Nintendo.
