Knives Out 4 gets disappointing update from Rian Johnson
Rian Johnson opened the BFI London Film Festival with Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, describing it as his “most personal” film to date. The Netflix sequel, featuring Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc, is set for release on December 12. The ensemble cast includes Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Mila Kunis, and Daryl McCormack. Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter that Wake Up Dead Man explores themes of “faith and religion,” inspired by his own upbringing.
When asked about Knives Out 4, Johnson admitted he has “no plans yet,” adding, “I got nothing. If you have anything, I’ll take it. I think it’s good to totally empty the well and then start from scratch on the next one.” He emphasized that future installments depend on creative inspiration and collaboration with Craig, saying, “As long as Daniel and I have fun doing it, and he wants to do them, as long as audiences like them, and also as long as we can keep challenging ourselves and coming up with something that’s genuinely new.”
Further, Glenn Close praised Johnson’s filmmaking process, calling him “a great writer” and “a wonderful director.” McCormack said, “Ryan and Daniel have done an amazing job of just making this the most welcoming experience,” and added that he was proud to join Johnson’s “most personal” film yet.
Wake Up Dead Man premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last month before arriving in London. The Knives Out franchise began in 2019, followed by Glass Onion in 2022. Both films earned critical acclaim, and Wake Up Dead Man currently holds a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score. The new installment will release in select theaters on November 26 before streaming globally on Netflix.
