The Punisher’s Ben Barnes wants to be Batman in DCU

Ben Barnes, known for playing Billy Russo in The Punisher, revealed he wants to play Batman in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. Speaking with Collider’s Maggie Lovitt during a panel at FanX Salt Lake Comic Convention, Barnes explained that the Caped Crusader has been a dream role since his childhood. “In every single [family video], I was dressed like Batman or Robin Hood. I think there may have been a Spider-Man one, but it was mainly Batman. So obviously, I was, from age 4 and up, I obviously requested that,” Barnes said.

When Lovitt suggested putting the idea into existence, Barnes responded, “Hey, I accept. […] Just call me, I’ve got Bruce Wayne ready to go.” He also recalled growing up with Marvel Top Trumps card games. However, when it came to role-playing as a child, Batman was always his first choice.

Barnes’ comments come as DC Studios prepares to introduce a new version of the Dark Knight. James Gunn and Peter Safran’s first DCU slate, Gods & Monsters, features The Brave and the Bold. The film will debut Batman alongside Damian Wayne.

Gunn recently addressed fan discussions about the character, saying on a podcast with Tom Segura: “Should Batman have white eyes? That’s a big subject of conversation. It’s like, ‘Guys, that’s really what matters?’ But those are the things they care about. What matters is the character, the story, and I think we have a really really good story now for what’s happening with Batman.”

Andy Muschietti directs The Brave and the Bold, while Matt Reeves continues The Batman: Part II separately under the “Elseworlds” label. At 43, Barnes has not received any official link to the role, but he has carried the dream of playing Batman since before his Marvel days.
