National Treasure 3 Update Reveals Director for Nicolas Cage Movie

National Treasure 3 has received an exciting update.

The first National Treasure movie was released in 2004 by Walt Disney Pictures. Directed by Jon Turteltaub, the adventure heist movie stars Nicolas Cage as Benjamin Franklin Gates, Sean Bean as Ian Howe, Diane Kruger as Dr. Abigail Chase, Justin Bartha as Riley Poole, Harvey Keitel as Agent Peter Sandusky, and Jon Voight as Patrick Henry Gates. That movie made around $347.5 million at the global box office.

It was followed by the 2007 sequel, titled National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which was an even bigger hit for Disney, as it made approximately $459.2 million worldwide. Turteltaub returned to direct and Cage reprised his role as Ben Gates, while Ed Harris and Helen Mirren joined the cast as Mitch Wilkinson and Dr. Emily Appleton-Gates.

A Disney+ television series, National Treasure: Edge of History, then premiered in 2022. Cage did not return for the series, which was canceled after one season.

What is the new National Treasure 3 update?

While there’s been talk of making National Treasure 3 for years, producer Jerry Bruckheimer shared an exciting update about the project when speaking to The Wrap.

“We’re getting closer on that one,” Bruckheimer said about National Treasure 3.

Bruckheimer confirmed that the intention is for Turteltaub to direct National Treasure 3, while Cage is also expected to return. Further details beyond that are unavailable at this time, as it’s still very much in the development phase.

Regarding whether or not he had any regrets about moving National Treasure to the small screen with Edge of History, Bruckheimer said, “No, it was completely different. We want to keep the name alive in the public eye [and] the zeitgeist.”

The first two National Treasure movies, along with National Treasure: Edge of History, are currently streaming on Disney+. National Treasure 3, meanwhile, does not have a release date at this time.
