Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean Movie Gets Major Update, Delay Explained

A new Pirates of the Caribbean movie starring Margot Robbie received a promising update from producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

Bruckheimer recently sat down for an interview at TheWrap’s TheGrill 2025 conference. During the conversation, Bruckheimer discussed the status of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, including a Robbie-led iteration that has been in development for years.

“She’s still involved,” Bruckheimer said when asked about Robbie’s involvement in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Christina Hodson was originally attached to pen the Robbie-led entry.

Why has there been a delay making Margot Robbie’s Pirates of the Caribbean movie?

Bruckheimer has been trying to get another Pirates of the Caribbean installment made for years. Why has it taken this long? For Bruckheimer to make the movie, there has to be a finished screenplay.

“We’re working on a script,” Bruckheimer said. “If we don’t have it on the page, it’s not gonna get on the screen.”

The original plan for the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was to have two new movies. One would be a Robbie-led, female-focused movie, and the other would be the long-gestating Pirates of the Caribbean 6 that would serve as a soft reboot.

“We had two scripts at one point, and then one kind of dropped out, and we kind of went with the other one,” Bruckheimer explained.

Ted Elliot, who co-authored the first four Pirates of the Caribbean movies, contributed to the Pirates of the Caribbean 6 script.

“He worked on it, and we’ve brought someone else in to fill in the blanks,” Bruckheimer said.

In recent years, Bruckheimer has produced several legacy sequels for iconic franchises, including Top Gun: Maverick and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. However, Pirates of the Caribbean is the “hardest” franchise to continue.

“That world is so cool and specific,” Bruckheimer explained. “You just gotta find the right way in.”

As of now, no upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movies have release dates.
