James Mangold’s New Movie Deal Could Be Bad News for Star Wars & DC

James Mangold has signed a new movie deal with Paramount, which has raised concerns regarding his Star Wars and Swamp Thing projects. The Logan director is set to direct a new Star Wars movie, which would be set around the dawn of the Jedi. While the announcement was made in 2023, there have been no further updates since then.

James Mangold’s Paramount deal could delay Star Wars and Swamp Thing movies

According to a report by The Wrap, director James Mangold has signed a new deal with Paramount following the announcement of their first collaboration, High Side.

Paramount’s Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein said in a statement, “James Mangold is one of the most talented filmmakers working today, and we could not be more excited to welcome him to the Paramount family, starting with ‘High Side’ and many more collaborations to come.”

Additionally, Mangold shared his excitement about teaming up with the studio and stated, “I am very excited to begin this collaboration with David, Josh and Dana and everyone at Paramount. The enthusiasm they have demonstrated toward big screen films and the passion with which they have embraced my ideas for future projects is truly thrilling.”

However, this collaboration has reportedly led fans to wonder if Mangold’s upcoming Star Wars and Swamp Thing movies will be delayed. DC co-CEO, James Gunn, had announced that Mangold would work on the Swamp Thing movie. However, in July 2025, Gunn reportedly shared that Mangold had not yet given him a script.

Regarding the Star Wars movie, Mangold spoke to MovieWeb in January and revealed that his movie “would be taking place 25,000 years before any known ‘Star Wars’ movies takes place.” He further shared that the movie is something that he always wanted to do and “was inspired by as a teenager.”
