The Batman 2 Co-Writer ‘Trying’ Hard for Tobey Maguire-Led Spider-Man 4
The Batman 2 co-writer Mattson Tomlin has revealed that he is “trying” to connect with director Sam Raimi about the possibility of Spider-Man 4. His remarks surfaced during a recent exchange with fans on social media, where he discussed his interest in continuing Tobey Maguire’s version of the character.
Mattson Tomlin really gunning to make Spider-Man 4
Tomlin commented under a fan post on X (formerly Twitter), writing that he is “trying” to reach out to Sam Raimi. He also stated in the past that he would like to write a script where Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man is “juggling being a husband and a father.”
In the late 2000s, plans for a fourth Spider-Man film with Maguire and Raimi ended after Raimi cited creative differences, and Sony opted to reboot the franchise. Since then, Maguire’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 reignited fan interest in a continuation of Raimi’s series. Tomlin has engaged with this renewed enthusiasm on social media, responding directly to fan requests and noting, “Trying!” when asked about writing the script.
In July 2025, Tomlin outlined his vision more clearly during a fan Q&A. He explained, “Honestly right now my main interest in this respect would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey’s Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father. Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards given the last 8 films.” He emphasized that his approach would explore Peter Parker balancing his responsibilities as both a parent and a superhero.
Tomlin also responded to another account focused on Raimi-related projects. The fan comment read, “Call me Mattson, and by call me I mean call the real Sam Raimi.” This direct outreach reflects his ongoing efforts to involve Raimi, who in 2022 commented, “My love for the characters hasn’t diminished one iota,” while acknowledging there would be “a lot of questions that would have to be answered” about a possible return. As of now, neither Marvel Studios nor Sony Pictures has officially confirmed any development of Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire. Tomlin’s statements remain informal, but they have fueled ongoing speculation among fans hoping to see Raimi and Maguire reunite.
