Dwayne Johnson & Emily Blunt Give Jungle Cruise 2 Update
Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt have given fans a brand new Jungle Cruise 2 update, providing some new insight on what the future of the franchise might look like.
What’s the latest Jungle Cruise 2 update?
Speaking to Variety while on the red carpet for the premiere of their film The Smashing Machine, Blunt was fairly blunt in what it might take for a sequel to be made. “I feel like we’ve gotta do something else now,” Blunt teased, before saying to “call Disney” in order to get it done.
Johnson was also asked if a Jungle Cruise sequel could be in the works, and jokingly said that the potential success of The Smashing Machine could lead to a Jungle Cruise 2. He also joked that he and Blunt would be calling Disney to get going on one.
Although the pair were mostly joking, reports do suggest that a Jungle Cruise 2 is in the works. Earlier this year, insider Daniel Richtman said that Dwayne Johnson will be returning for the sequel, which is currently in the works at Disney. Matthew Robinson (Love and Monsters) is reportedly handling the script for the film.
Originally released in 2021, Jungle Cruise is based on the legendary Disney theme park attraction of the same name. The film starred Johnson, Blunt, Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. The film followed the story of the captain of a small riverboat who helps a scientist and her brother journey through the jungle to look for the Tree of life.
Jungle Cruise released simultaneously in theaters and digitally due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and received mostly mixed reviews. In total, the film earned $220.9 million globally against a reported budget of $200 million, but also reportedly made close to $100 million on Disney+’s Premier Access service.
