Latest Marvel Release Date Removal Is Bad News for Blade Movie
Marvel Studios’ long-anticipated Blade reboot seems to have hit another delay. The project, first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019 with Mahershala Ali set to star, has lost its previously held release date. Disney has now removed the July 23, 2027 slot from the schedule, meaning Blade will not arrive until 2028 at the earliest. This pushes its debut to at least nine years after the initial announcement.
Marvel’s Blade movie won’t arrive at least until 9 years post announcement
Disney reassigned the July 23, 2027, date to The Simpsons Movie 2, which will open alongside Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and Locksmith Animation’s Bad Fairies. James Gunn will debut his Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow, earlier that month on July 9, 2027.
Marvel had originally placed an untitled film on the July 23 slot, sparking speculation that the project was connected to Blade.
Marvel Studios has shifted its current phase lineup. Joe and Anthony Russo will direct Avengers: Doomsday, arriving on December 18, 2026, and will also helm Avengers: Secret Wars, scheduled for December 17, 2027. Before those releases, Marvel and Sony will launch Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31, 2026, with Tom Holland returning as Spider-Man alongside Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Mark Ruffalo.
Marvel has reintroduced Blade’s presence through animation. In September 2025, Marvel Zombies premiered on Disney+, featuring a version of the character called Blade Knight. Voiced by Todd Williams, this amalgam of Blade and Moon Knight exists outside the main MCU continuity. Director Bryan Andrews explained, “We already knew immediately it was going to be Blade Knight,” noting that the animated character avoided conflict with ongoing live-action script changes. Ali’s live-action Blade debut, therefore, remains in flux, with Marvel’s latest schedule adjustment confirming that audiences will most likely not see the character in theaters before 2028.
