Glen Powell & Michael B. Jordan in Talks to Reboot Iconic 80s TV Show as Movie
Glen Powell (Twisters) and Michael B. Jordan (Sinners) have reportedly entered negotiations to star in Universal Pictures’ upcoming Miami Vice movie, which will reboot of the iconic crime drama show from the 1980s. The film is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on August 6, 2027.
What do we know about Glen Powell & Michael B. Jordan’s potential roles?
According to Nexus Point News, Universal Pictures is reportedly eyeing Powell and Jordan for the leading roles of James “Sonny” Crockett and Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs, respectively. In the original show, Sonny was played by Don Johnson, while Philip Michael Thomas portrayed Rico. This isn’t the first time that the studio has adapted the show into a movie. It previously produced the 2006 reboot led by Jamie Foxx as Rico and Colin Farrell as Sonny.
The new movie will be directed by Joseph Kosinski from a screenplay written by Emmy-winning scribe Dan Gilroy, based on an earlier draft by Eric Warren Singer. Should Powell’s deal push through, this project would reunite him with Kosinski, after previously working together in 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick. The movie will be produced by Kosinski and Dylan Clark.
The original Miami Vice series was created by Anthony Yerkovich, with legendary filmmaker Michael Mann serving as its executive producer. It ran on-air for five seasons from 1984 to 1989 on NBC. The series followed two Metro-Dade Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami.
Powell will next be seen in Edgar Wright’s upcoming Stephen King remake of The Running Man, which premieres on November 14. He will also star in Hulu’s Chad Powers series, which will be his first TV show as the solo lead. Meanwhile, Jordan was most recently seen in Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed vampire movie Sinners. He is currently filming the upcoming romantic heist movie The Thomas Crown Affair, which he is also directing.
