Batman: 2 Different Batmen Won’t Be a Problem, Explains James Gunn
James Gunn has addressed fan concerns about 2 live-action Batmen coexisting on screen. The DC Studios co-CEO recently spoke about the issue in a new interview while promoting ongoing projects like Peacemaker and the upcoming DCU slate.
James Gunn is sure Batman fans won’t be confused with 2 Batmen
James Gunn addressed concerns about having two live-action Batmen during a Phase Hero podcast interview. He explained that while Matt Reeves’ The Batman films will remain in an Elseworlds continuity, The Brave and the Bold will introduce a new Batman within the DC Universe. When asked whether audiences might find this confusing, Gunn responded, “Yeah, but sometimes. But is it causing anybody grief in any way? … The casuals always understand.”
He elaborated by comparing it to Peacemaker continuity shifts: “You can say, ‘Oh, yeah, he’s changed Peacemaker, there was some Justice League [characters that] was in that. Now it’s Justice Gang.’ And regular people who just like TV shows are like, ‘Oh, okay. That’s weird.’ And then they’re done.” Gunn stressed that casual viewers adapt easily, while heavy fans tend to overcomplicate the issue.
Robert Pattinson will continue leading Reeves’ franchise as The Batman Part II begins production in April 2026, following the script completed earlier this year by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin. The film will release on October 1, 2027, and continue the noir-driven Gotham saga while running alongside the Penguin spin-off on Max.
Andy Muschietti will direct The Brave and the Bold, the mainline DCU’s Batman reboot now in development. The story will highlight Bruce Wayne’s relationship with Damian Wayne, who steps into the role of Robin. The film will launch within Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” and introduce the Bat-Family in Gunn’s continuity.
DC has historically presented concurrent portrayals of its heroes across platforms. The DCEU films operated alongside The CW’s Arrowverse, which offered alternate versions of characters like The Flash.
Gunn cited this precedent and emphasized that audiences can recognize the difference between universes. Both Batman projects will move forward independently, delivering distinct creative interpretations of the Dark Knight’s mythology.
