The Authority Update Brings Good & Bad News for Movie

James Gunn discussed the uncertain future of The Authority, citing development challenges and hinting at alternatives. He said they are still carefully working out its exact place in the evolving DCU.

James Gunn on why he may not do The Authority as a movie

James Gunn had earlier said that The Authority is “the one that got messed with through all of the other things that were happening” and that “the script had a harder time coming along.” Now, Gunn told Deadline, “There’s someone who is a really good creator who talked to me the other day,” signaling that development conversations are ongoing.

When asked if The Authority could shift from a film to a series, Gunn responded, “Who knows,” and explained, “I’m probably not going to do certain movies with characters who (audiences) don’t know; it’s harder to get people in the theater for that kind of thing.”

The Authority is a team of DC antiheroes formed after StormWatch’s destruction. Jenny Sparks created the group with Swift and Jack Hawksmoor, later joined by The Engineer (Angela Spica), Jeroen Thornedike as the Doctor, Apollo, and Midnighter. The team takes matters into their own hands and often acts outside the control of world governments.

Gunn called The Authority one of the hardest projects to adapt at a DC press conference earlier this year. He explained that other films, including Superman, overlapped with its narrative space. This slowed the script’s progress and made it difficult to define the team’s place in the wider DCU.

In a separate conversation with Straw Hat Goofy, via GamesRadar+, Gunn laughed when asked if development on The Authority was “not going so well.” He then listed other DCU titles actively moving forward. These included Supergirl, Lanterns, Clayface, The Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman, The Batman Part II, and Sgt. Rock.

Gunn also confirmed that he had canceled another DCU project due to script issues. However, he did not identify whether that project was The Authority.
