Joachim Rønning talks Maleficent 3 return possibility
Joachim Rønning recently addressed the potential of returning to direct Maleficent 3, the next installment in Disney’s ongoing franchise. It presents the story of the classic Sleeping Beauty story from the perspective of Maleficent. Rønning previously directed Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. However, despite the announcement of the third film back in 2021, no director has officially been confirmed for the project.
In an interview with Screen Rant while promoting his upcoming movie, Tron: Ares, Rønning spoke about the possibility of returning to the Maleficent franchise. He was specifically asked, “They’re writing a third script right now, as of March, for a third Maleficent movie. Would you be interested?”
Rønning said, “That’s a good question.” After careful consideration, he explained that his focus remains on good story, which he considers the most important part of any project. He said, “I think I’m always interested in a good story. For me, that’s what it’s all about. So, we will see what the future holds.”
The director also expressed his appreciation for his experiences directing the Disney projects. He stated, “I love Maleficent, and I love Pirates. It changed my life and career, being able to get that gig.”
Furthermore, Rønning reflected on his current work. He said, “Now doing Tron, I feel so lucky to have been able to do [these big projects]. And also making a smaller film like Young Woman and the Sea, where we go and we have Daisy Ridley and we’re out on the ocean doing it for real. And here [with Tron] we’re in the computer. I feel very lucky.
Angelina Jolie is confirmed to reprise her role as the iconic character. Meanwhile, screenwriter Linda Woolverton, who penned the first two films, is also set to return.
