James Gunn on Batman’s Blue-Grey Suit & White Eyes in DCU Story

James Gunn recently discussed Batman’s role in the DC Universe and hinted at progress on his next big story. In a new conversation, he suggested key elements are already in motion. He also touched on fan debates over the character’s look, including the blue-grey suit.

James Gunn gave a direct update on Batman in the DC Universe during his appearance on the 2 Bears, 1 Cave podcast. He explained, “I think we have a really, really good story now for what’s happening with Batman,” referring to the upcoming film The Brave and the Bold. Gunn also addressed fan speculation about whether the DCU would adopt the blue-grey costume and white eyes often associated with the character in comics.

He noted that debates over details such as Batman’s utility belt, chest emblem, or eye color can be intense, saying, “There’s a religious aspect to some of this stuff that’s very uncomfortable… none of those things are what’s most important to me. What matters is the character, the story.” Gunn emphasized that multiple versions of Batman hold value, from the gritty detective to the brute fighter and even the campy Silver Age version with Bat-Mite.

Reflecting on his own experience, Gunn recalled reading Neal Adams and Denny O’Neil’s 1970s Batman comics. He singled out the supernatural-tinged Batman #225, calling it his favorite story.

Gunn said it showed “Batman in a sort of supernatural environment,” something not yet seen on screen. That era made him realize Batman could be darker and more mature than the lighter television versions.

The Brave and the Bold will explore Batman’s relationship with his son Damian Wayne as Robin. Gunn’s comments hint the film may also include mystical elements tied to Ra’s al-Ghul and the Lazarus Pit. The movie does not yet have a release date.

Gunn confirmed Batman remains central to the multi-film DCU storyline that connects Superman, Peacemaker, and future projects.
