Zach Cregger confirms plans for Weapons’ Aunt Gladys prequel

In a Fangoria interview, Zach Cregger confirmed Warner Bros. is developing a Weapons prequel focused on Aunt Gladys. “It is real and I’ve been talking to Warner Bros. about it. There’s a story and I’m pretty excited about it. It’s not bullshit,” Cregger said. He added that the concept existed prior to the film’s release. “I was ready. I had it kind of in my pocket before the movie came out.”

Cregger reflected on Weapons, which follows children disappearing in one night and stars Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Benedict Wong, Alden Ehrenreich, Amy Madigan, and Austin Abrams. Speaking about the collaborative effort, he stated, “Everyone did such a great job. It’s not like it’s just my movie. It takes a lot of talented artists to make any movie. Everybody brought their A-game, and I’m happy to be the beneficiary.”

Cregger highlighted Amy Madigan’s performance as Aunt Gladys and broke down the inspirations behind her look. He continued, “Cindy Sherman, the photographer, she does these amazing self-portraits. Sometimes she’ll use light prosthetics to give herself this gross, uncanny valley look. I just love her stuff.”

He added, “Then, there’s the scene in Twin Peaks, where Kyle McLaughlin gets off a plane in the first episode, and there’s a woman on the tarmac. She’s wearing this crazy, outlandish, brightly colored outfit. She’s making this weird face and doing this weird peacock dance. It just scared the shit out of me as a kid.”

Cregger also discussed his next project, a reboot of Resident Evil for Sony Pictures. “I’m not telling Leon’s story. You know what I mean? I’m not using any of the characters from the games. I’m telling my story that exists in the world of Resident Evil 2,” he explained.

Weapons is out on digital and releases on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 14.
