Why Dorothy Will Hardly Be Seen in Wicked: For Good, Explained
Dorothy’s face may not actually be seen in Wicked: For Good.
Wicked: For Good arrives in United States theaters this coming November from Universal Pictures. An adaptation of the 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman and a sequel to 2024’s Wicked, For Good will see Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande reprise their respective roles as Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Upland.
What do we know about Dorothy in Wicked: For Good?
While it is known that Dorothy Gale — famously played by Judy Garland in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz — will be in Wicked: For Good, a new article from Empire Magazine explains that, while her presence will be felt, she won’t “exactly be a character in the film.”
Rather, the article notes that Dorothy will be “seen largely from a distance, or from behind,” suggesting that her face may never actually be shown in the film.
“I think that’s such a wonderful thing to do, because then everyone gets to keep the Dorothy that they know,” Erivo said of that decision.
Grande, meanwhile, explained that Glinda has a “little bit of shadiness” towards Dorothy.
“There’s a lot going on, and she doesn’t really have time to deal with this,” Grande said. “She could have told her to take the Emerald City train! But she didn’t. That’s a little shady, Glinda! So I leaned all the way into Glinda sort of having an eye roll for Dorothy whenever she has to deal with her.”
Directed by Jon M. Chu, the cast of Wicked: For Good also includes Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Jeff Goldblum as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Bowen Yang as Pfannee, Bronwyn James as ShenShen, and Sharon D. Clarke as the voice of Dulcibear.
Wicked: For Good will be released on November 21, 2025.
