Classic 80s Horror Movie Getting Reboot From SNL Star

A classic 80s horror movie is getting rebooted from an unlikely source.

What 80s horror movie is getting a reboot?

According to a new report from Deadline, the cult classic 80s slasher Sleepaway Camp is getting a remake. The rights to a remake were recently acquired by AFA, the production company of SNL alum Keenan Thompson and Johnny Ryan Jr.

Deadline’s report notes that Robert Hiltzik, who wrote and directed the original movie, will actually return to the remake. Hiltzik will once again write and direct the new project, the plot and contents of which remains completely under wraps as of now.

Originally released in 1983, Sleepaway Camp followed the story of a series of deaths that occur at a summer camp. The movie is infamous for its twist ending, which reveals that the killer is actually demure protagonist Angela. Originally born as Peter, she was then forced to be raised as “Angela” by her eccentric Aunt Martha after the real Angela — her sister — was killed in a boating accident. Angela then goes on to be a camp counselor herself in later films — and racks up quite a body count, too.

The ending is named as one of the most shocking in history, and helped the film develop a massive cult following among queer audiences. The Sleepaway Camp franchise as a whole spawned four sequels, the last of which, Sleepaway Camp IV: The Survivor, released in 2012.
