Matt Reeves on if He’ll Direct a DCU Movie After The Batman 2
Ever since James Gunn’s DCU was first announced, many fans have been vying for Robert Pattinson’s Batman to somehow cross over to the DCU’s continuity. With The Batman 2 now moving ahead at full steam, writer and director Matt Reeves has explained his movies’ relation to the DCU, while also discussing whether he’ll ever collaborate with Gunn to produce a DCU film.
Matt Reeves confirms The Batman 2 is an Elseworlds movie
In a recent conversation with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Matt Reeves inadvertently revealed that The Batman 2, as well as its predecessor, are Elseworlds projects, which distances them from the DCU.
Referring to the time when Gunn lauded his talent as a filmmaker and expressed interest in working with him, Reeves said, “First of all, I’m very flattered. That’s very kind of James to say, and it would be really exciting to work with them, of course. And we are working with them on this. I mean, it’s DC, it’s like Elseworlds, but it is DC, so it’s theirs as well. But what the future brings and what I am doing will be clear when it comes.”
Reeves also revealed whether he had had any discussions with Gunn about heading a DCU project in the future, noting, “We haven’t talked about anything like that. We have had conversations about how things would work, and all that kind of stuff, just in general, and so of course, it would be a lot of fun.”
He then expanded on his current priorities, stating, “What I really want to do is I want to play out these stories that we began and make that sort of arrive at the conclusion that I hoped we would arrive at at the beginning, but it’s very exciting.”
After a number of delays, The Batman 2 recently received an updated release date and is now scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.
