Dave Bautista on if James Gunn has called him for another DC role
Dave Bautista addressed whether James Gunn has contacted him for a role in the DCU during an interview with Screen Rant while promoting Afterburn. When asked about potential talks with Gunn, Bautista replied, “I haven’t. You know, I check back with them all the time to see, because I want to be in that world. And I don’t want to say I’m disappointed, but I was really just, you know, I was hoping a year or so ago that I would’ve gotten the call from James saying, ‘Hey man, we got something for you.’”
Bautista confirmed he has not spoken directly with Gunn or Peter Safran but added, “I just keep hearing kind of through the pipeline that they’re thinking about me for something, but I don’t know what it is. And I haven’t heard directly from either James or Peter. But I really want to be in that room, you know, I was hoping to go over there and do something with them, but I haven’t heard anything. And I’m not getting younger.”
The 56-year-old actor collaborated with Gunn in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He played Drax the Destroyer in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1–3. He also reprised the role in Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Thor: Love and Thunder, and the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Gunn said he had originally written Peacemaker in 2021’s The Suicide Squad for Bautista. John Cena ultimately took the role instead.
Gunn and Peter Safran launched DC Studios’ Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” in 2025. The slate started with Superman starring David Corenswet and continued with the second season of Cena’s Peacemaker. Gunn linked several of his former Marvel collaborators, including Zoe Saldana, to future DCU roles. Bautista confirmed that he is still waiting for his chance to join the franchise.
