Chris Hemsworth-Led Submarine Action Movie Begins Filming, Adds New Actor

Filming has officially kicked off on Subversion, the highly anticipated submarine movie led by Chris Hemsworth. The production is underway in Queensland, Australia, as Joe Cole joins the ensemble cast. Though the release date remains unannounced, the action thriller has generated significant buzz amongst fans.

According to Deadline, Joe Cole has joined Chris Hemsworth in Amazon MGM Studios’ high-stakes submarine movie.

Titled Subversion, the filming has officially begun in Queensland, Australia. Filming is taking place at the Gold Coast’s Village Roadshow Studios, where key scenes will make use of the facility’s water tank. While the release date has not been confirmed, reports suggest the film is expected to arrive sometime next year.

Screen Queensland announced that Subversion will also feature Lily James, Michael Peña, Simone Kessell, Robert John Burke, and David Wenham. Talking about the project, Jacqui Feeney, CEO of Screen Queensland, said, “We are proud to continue our ongoing collaboration with Amazon MGM Studios which has recently included the productions Balls Up, The Bluff and Voltron. Subversion further cements the trust that has been established with our local crew base.”

She added, “Subversion will benefit from Queensland’s growing expertise on high-end, highly technical action productions, as well as the water tank infrastructure at Village Roadshow Studios and the capabilities of our innovative virtual and post-production businesses.”

The film’s story follows a naval commander, played by Hemsworth, who is blackmailed by a cartel-like organization. He is forced to pilot a submarine carrying illegal cargo across dangerous international waters. He finds himself in a tense confrontation with a Coast Guard officer, played by Lily James, as he faces life-threatening challenges both inside the vessel and on the open sea.

The film is directed by Patrick Vollrath, with a screenplay by Andrew Ferguson. Lorenzo di Bonaventura serves as producer, and he’s joined by executive producers Stephen Shafer, Greg Cohen, and E. Bennett Walsh.
