Superman & Captain America Star on How Marvel & DC Are Different
An MCU star recently highlighted the biggest difference between Marvel and DC productions. In a new interview, the actor stated that James Gunn uses completed scripts, whereas the Russo brothers adjust scripts during filming. He also noted how the two approaches impact performers on set.
Frank Grillo on the major difference between Marvel and DC
Frank Grillo shared his Marvel and DC insights on The Morning After Pod with Brandon Davis.
He explained that the Russo brothers, who directed his Marvel projects, were “more comfortable with directing on scripts that are not totally complete,” a process he described as “not uncommon” in filmmaking.
In contrast, he said James Gunn approaches DC projects differently. “James… everything was done. All the scripts are done in advance. You don’t really need to fudge with it at all,” he stated.
Grillo emphasized that both Marvel and DC filmmakers succeed with their unique methods. He noted, “The Russos have a whole bunch of people that have their hand in the cookie jar,” while Gunn leads with more direct creative authority alongside Peter Safran.
According to Grillo, this results in “a whole different way of movie making.” He added, “It’s not like James has a committee that he needs to answer to. It’s him and Peter Safran… whereas the Russo brothers have a whole bunch of people.”
The actor also highlighted how each system shapes the experience for performers. Speaking about Gunn’s method, Grillo said, “He’s really got a clear concept… his theory is there’s no movie without a script. The script is going to be as tight as it can possibly be before you start shooting.”
On Marvel, he described the collaborative adjustments during production as part of the process, noting, “Most scripts as the movie starts to go, it wants what it wants and you have to make adjustments.”
Reflecting on the legacy of both studios, Grillo stated, “When we look back 50 years, we’re going to look at this time and go, ‘Well, these guys created this genre.’ They’re all amazing… They just do it differently.”
Notably, Grillo played Brock Rumlow / Crossbones in the MCU’s Captain America: Civil War and Rick Flag Sr. in the DC Universe’s Superman.
