Barney: Ayo Edebiri’s Live-Action Movie Gets Exciting Update
The Barney movie from A24 and Mattel Films has received a major update regarding the current progress of the live-action adaptation’s development. It will be produced by Academy Award nominee Daniel Kaluuya, who has been attached to the highly anticipated project since 2019.
What is the new update for the live-action Barney movie?
According to The InSneider, The Bear star Ayo Edebiri has reportedly completed writing the screenplay for the live-action Barney movie, which is being described as a “banger.” In addition to adapting the popular children’s series into a movie, Edebiri is also expected to lead the cast. The outlet noted that Edebiri and Kaluuya planned “to recapture the magic” of watching PBS’ original children’s show Barney & Friends.
The story is rumored to center around “a group of people who magically enter Barney’s world through an old episode of the series.” Kaluuya is producing the movie through his 59% Productions banner, alongside Robbie Brenner and Rowan Riley. Mattel Films’ Kevin McKeon and Andrew Scannell have been tapped to oversee the project.
Barney & Friends revolved around the iconic purple dinosaur, who has become a pop culture icon since making his debut in 1992. The character was created by Sheryl Leach, who was inspired to come up with an idea to make something about singing and dancing that could appeal to her son.
Edebiri will next be seen in Luca Guadagnino’s newest directorial feature, After the Hunt, which also stars Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. It recently had its world premiere at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival. Later this year, the Emmy Award winner is also set to star opposite Jamie Lee Curtis and Emma Mackey in the upcoming political comedy-drama Ella McCay, which will premiere on December 12.
