James Gunn Reveals DCU Actor Is ‘The Best Casting Choice’ He’s Ever Made
James Gunn has picked who might be the best casting choice when he’s ever done.
Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU officially kicked off in December 2024 with the animated Creature Commandos television show. That was followed by Gunn’s Superman movie, while Peacemaker Season 2 is now airing on HBO Max, with new episodes dropping on Thursdays. Following that, Lanterns, Clayface, and Supergirl will all arrive next year, while Man of Tomorrow will be released in 2027.
Prior to helming the DCU, Gunn made 2021’s The Suicide Squad and helmed the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for Marvel. His filmography also includes 2006’s Slither and 2010’s Super, while he’s worked on the scripts for movies such as 1996’s Tromeo and Juliet, 2002’s Scooby-Doo, 2016’s The Belko Experiment, and more.
What did James Gunn say about his best casting choice?
Appearing on the Howard Stern Show, via DC Film News on Twitter, Gunn said that Milly Alcock as Supergirl “might be the best bit of casting” he’s ever done in his “entire life.” He added, “I think she’s absolutely stunning in the movie.”
Alcock’s Kara Zor-El briefly appeared at the end of Superman, while the Craig Gillespie-directed Supergirl movie is currently scheduled to arrive on June 26, 2026. The cast of the movie also includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, and Jason Momoa as Lobo.
The film is based on Tom King and Bilquis Evelyn’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow DC Comics miniseries. The script comes from Ana Nogueira, while Gunn and Safran serve as producers.
Outside of the DCU, Alcock played a young Rhaenyra Targaryen in HBO’s House of the Dragon, while she also recently starred as Simone DeWitt on Netflix’s Sirens.
