Superman Cast Member ‘Fired’ for Helping a Kid

James Gunn apparently fired a cast member after they broke a rule on the set of the DCU’s first movie, Superman. Gunn’s Superman arrived in theaters in July 2025 and quickly became the highest-grossing superhero movie of the year. Starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicolas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Edi Gathegi, among many more, the comic book blockbuster has so far made over $600 million at the global box office.

Superman’s AJ Bernard says a cast member was ‘kicked out’ by James Gunn for helping him

In an interview early this month, child actor AJ Bernard, who had one of the most iconic moments in the Superman movie, shared how James Gunn fired a cast member from the movie for helping him.

While speaking on the Comic Misfits Podcast, Bernard recalled the scene from the battle between Boravia and Jarhanpur, where he holds a big pole with the Superman flag on it. He stated how a cast member came to help him lift the heavy pole and added, “When we did the movie, I was struggling to pick it up; nobody was supposed to help me, but somebody actually helped me. And they weren’t supposed to. So James Gunn got mad, and they got kicked out.”

AJ’s sister and Superman co-star Alaya added, “James Gunn fired a guy because he helped AJ pick up the flag.”

AJ further stated that the flag was heavy and added, “It was big because like three, three sticks on top of each other. It was like a big one, then a medium one, then a small one on top.” Alaya also stated that AJ had to carry the flag by himself when they all ran away in the scene in the movie. The scene can be seen during the finale of the movie, and the shot of the flag being lifted featured prominently in the film’s marketing.

Superman is currently running in theaters and is also available for fans to watch on digital platforms.
